iPhone Hidden album vs a photo vault app

The Hidden album keeps photos out of sight. It does not keep them from anyone who knows your passcode.

In short

The Hidden album removes photos from your library and, since iOS 16, locks behind Face ID, Touch ID or your iPhone passcode. Anyone who knows that passcode can open it, and it syncs to every device on your Apple ID. A vault app with its own secret and its own encryption protects photos from people who know your passcode; the Hidden album does not.

Key takeaways

  • The Hidden album unlocks with the same passcode as the phone.
  • It syncs through iCloud Photos to your other devices.
  • iCloud Photos is end-to-end encrypted only with Advanced Data Protection turned on.

What the Hidden album does well

  • Hidden photos disappear from the Library view, from albums, from Memories and from widgets.
  • Since iOS 16, opening the album requires Face ID, Touch ID or the iPhone passcode.
  • It is free, built in and requires nothing to install.

Against a casual glance — someone scrolling through your photos while you show them one — that is often enough.

Where it stops

It opens with your iPhone passcode

The lock is the same secret that unlocks the phone. A partner, a family member, a colleague who watched you type it, or anyone you hand your unlocked phone to with the passcode can open the Hidden album in seconds.

It follows your Apple ID

With iCloud Photos turned on, hidden photos sync to your iPad and Mac, and are visible to anyone who can open the Hidden album there — on a shared family Mac, for instance.

Apple holds the keys by default

Under standard data protection, iCloud Photos is encrypted in transit and on Apple’s servers, but Apple holds the keys. Photos become end-to-end encrypted only if you turn on Advanced Data Protection, available since iOS 16.2. Apple no longer offers it to new users in the United Kingdom since February 2025.

Hidden album

  • Opens with the iPhone passcode or Face ID
  • Syncs to your other devices with iCloud Photos

Latent vault

  • Opens with its own pattern
  • Each file encrypted with its own key
The Hidden album opens with the iPhone passcode. A vault opens with a secret of its own.

When a vault app makes the difference

A separate vault matters when the people you want to keep photos from are people who could know your passcode, or when you want photos that never sync to other devices. A vault like Latent uses its own pattern or password and encrypts files itself, so the iPhone passcode alone opens nothing.

If you stay with the Hidden album

  • Turn on Face ID for the Hidden album in Settings › Photos (Settings › Apps › Photos on iOS 18 and later).
  • Turn on Advanced Data Protection if you use iCloud Photos.
  • Remember that Recently Deleted keeps deleted photos for 30 days.
