How to remove photo metadata on iPhone

iOS can drop the location when you share. Removing everything takes one more step.

1 min readLast reviewed

In short

When sharing a photo, tap Options at the top of the share sheet and turn off Location — and All Photos Data to drop the rest of the metadata. To stop new photos recording location, set Camera to Never in Location Services. For a file you need fully cleaned, a browser metadata tool removes everything without re-encoding.

Key takeaways

  • Share sheet › Options: turn off Location and All Photos Data.
  • Location Services › Camera › Never for future photos.
  • A screenshot also drops metadata, but lowers quality.

What a photo file can carry besides the picture itself.

When sharing

  1. Select the photo and tap Share.
  2. Tap Options at the top of the sheet.
  3. Turn off Location. Turn off All Photos Data to remove the other metadata too.
  4. Share.

These settings apply to that share only; the photo in your library keeps its metadata.

For all future photos

Go to Settings › Privacy & Security › Location Services › Camera and choose Never. Photos you take from then on contain no GPS coordinates.

To clean a file completely

The photo metadata tool on this site shows everything a photo contains — location, device, serial number, dates, AI declarations — and removes it all without re-encoding the image. It works in Safari on iPhone and uploads nothing.

The screenshot shortcut

A screenshot of a photo has none of the original metadata. It is quick, but it lowers resolution and includes whatever else was on screen.
